Meet Shawn, Katie, & Michael!

WOW!  It has been a busy winter.  We just finished up our 12th night of hosting the Warming Center for Little Rock’s unsheltered homeless and I wanted to take a minute and tell you one story about three of our over 1,200 guests we’ve been able to help.SHAWN-KATIE-MICHAEL-KRISTEN

Shawn, Katie, & their five-year-old son Michael lost their home, their jobs, and most everything else.  They spent their last few dollars and boarded a bus in Georgia headed to the promise of a job and a new home with family in Ft. Smith, AR.  Everything they owned they carried in a couple of suitcases and backpacks.  When they reached Little Rock the impending snow & ice resulted in their busline cutting their trip short.  Here they were in Little Rock, snow on the ground, no money in their pockets, and no place to go.

It was nearly midnight when the Little Rock Police found them huddled up on the sidewalk trying to figure out what to do next.  The officers loaded them up in their cars and brought them to the only place that was open and taking in people during the storm.  Three officers helped them bring their luggage inside as we greeted them.  When we asked them if they were hungry they dove into several bowls of chili as they told us they hadn’t eaten all day.  They were so thankful and appreciative for the meal and a warm place to stay.

We got them squared away and in bed by 1am. We immediately started trying to figure out what we could do to help them.  We reached out to our ARDC Ft. Smith location and the team at New Life Church in Ft. Smith.  In the end, we were able to get them transportation to Ft. Smith and connected with our team there.

The Dream Center is not just about a safe warm place to stay and a full belly.  It is about restoring dreams!  When the bus reached the end of its road, this family’s dream of a fresh start ended.  Between the purchase of a bus ticket and travelling food we spent less than $150.  That $150, along with a lot of love and attention, was all it took to RESTORE THE DREAM of this family.  Smiles were brought back to their faces and the fear of homelessness disappeared.

Our staff gets to see stories like this all the time.  We get the hugs from the thankful.  We get the letters of appreciation.  But the truth is, we couldn’t do it without all of you DREAM MAKERS who are investing your time and your finances into the DREAMS of others.

You make stories like this possible and we really value you and your opinion. By clicking the link below, you’ll be given a quick survey (2 minutes tops) that will help us know how to reach out better.  For your survey feedback, we will mail you one of our vinyl Dream Center Descals as a thank you.

In the mean time keep this family in your prayers as they start all over.  We know every knock on our doors happens for a reason!

Always Thankful,
